A series of unfortunate events unfolded on the tarmac of the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall over this past week where two vehicles were reported to have been broken into at two separate basketball events that were being held inside the indoor facility.
This has led to the belief that thieves are targeting the vehicles of patrons that are left on the west of the facility where the tarmac is located. There is a guard boot at the southern end of the tarmac but Kaieteur Sport has learnt that this is unattended.
One of vehicles was said to have been compromised last weekend during the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) Titan Bowl Schools’ Tournament. The other was tampered during Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association’s (GABA) League.
President of the GABA, Andrew Hercules have since lodged a report with the National Sports Commission on the matter. At its meeting on Tuesday, the Commission had discussed the YBG matter with a swift resolution on beefing up security forthcoming.
“I am reporting a matter to the National Sports Commission for which has escalated to the point that requires your attention. Over the past four weeks players, and fans, to a lesser extent, who attended the GABA 2015 League Championships, have been complaining to GABA about their vehicles being broken into,” Hercules said in his letter.
“More recently, as last night (Tuesday night) another vehicle was broken into. The perpetrator (s) carried away monies and a laptop from a player, who is a military officer of the Guyana Defense Force. GABA was informed that the content on the laptop was invaluable,” he continued, adding that the week before a junior player’s side window was broken and $20,000 removed.
Hercules went on to suggest that based on information he received from fans and players, those tasked with securing the venue appears to be negligible. “Sentiments were expressed, indicating that the security officer(s) on the night duty must have known something about these burglaries,” the GABA President posited.
According to him, the GABA is unable at this time to provide any extra security for patrons who park their vehicles at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall parking lot. The National Sport Commission considers this matter grave and will seek an urgent resolution.
