Government is moving to develop zoning laws to better manage the city when it comes to
development.
According to the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) in a notice Sunday, it will soon initiate a comprehensive review of the prevailing land use characteristics or patterns within the city of Georgetown, particularly as this relates to the many instances of incompatible land use scenarios, which have very negative environmental impacts.
“This exercise is based upon powers vested in the Central Housing and Planning Authority by virtue of the Town and Country Planning Act, Chapter 20:01 Laws of Guyana,” the authority disclosed.
This announcement comes mere months after the David Granger administration has been sworn in, a distinct change from the two decades reign of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
There have been growing complaints by residents of nearby bars and other commercial activities being carried out in residential areas.
According to the CH&PA notice, the general objective of the exercise will be to inform the preparation of new and up-to-date land use control policies, inclusive of zoning policies in order to better promote and maintain the orderly and harmonious development of land within the city.
“In view of the foregoing, the public is advised that it is required by the law that planning permission from the Central Housing and Planning Authority be obtained before the commencement of any building operations or the change of use of any land or building for the purpose of establishing a business.”
The authority insisted that an application must be made to its offices through the Georgetown City Council.
As a matter of fact, a developer’s manual is available at the CHPA’s website.
