At the end of November, the Guyana Police Force recorded a nine per cent increase in serious crimes in comparison to the same period last year. This has been now decreased to seven per cent by December 11, 2015, with the launch of ‘Operation Dragnet’ on December 1.
Operation Dragnet is backed by intelligence-led policing and improved cooperation from the public, said the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The serious crime reports include murder, robbery under arms, robbery with violence, robbery with aggravation, larceny from the person, break and enter and larceny, burglary, rape, and kidnapping.
One hundred and thirty-three murders were recorded at the end of November in comparison to 130 at the end of November 2014, an increase of two per cent.
At the end of November, robbery under arms overall, increased by four per cent in comparison to the same period in 2014. The statistics indicate an increase of six per cent in the number of armed robberies involving the use of firearms; while the figures are almost similar in relation to the number of armed robberies where instruments other than firearms were used by the perpetrators.
The statistics have revealed that there has been an increase of 26 per cent in the number of reports of rape, with 300 reports at the end of November compared to 238 for the same period last year. Break and enter and larceny and burglary have shown an overall increase of 11 per cent.
Up to the end of November, 103 illegal firearms were recovered by the police— one sub-machine gun, 56 pistols, 28 revolvers, 11 shotguns, six rifles and one pen-gun. This compares to 81 illegal firearms that were recovered during the same period last year.
The Police Force is continuing in its efforts to prevent crimes through its police-community partnership programme, along with social crime prevention interventions in the Policing Divisions. There is special emphasis on empowering youths, such as the Impact Albouystown Project and Youth Clubs. Meaningful support in this regard is being given by members of the religious community attached to the Cops and Faith Community Network (CFCN).
Senior officers of the Police Force’s Executive Leadership Team and Divisional Commanders, also held a number of community outreach meetings where issues and concerns raised by members of the public were addressed.
During November 2015, there were seven interventions supported by the religious community in the CFCN, which treats with juvenile first offenders for minor crimes as a pre-emptive intervention to the New Opportunity Corps.
Since the launch of the CFCN in September 2013 and up to November 30, last, there have been 245 such interventions. In all cases the youths were counselled by the religious leaders and following the involvement of parents/guardians, and the victims where necessary, the majority of them were warned and sent away.
In relation to the Family Liaison for victims of serious crimes and domestic violence project, which is also under the CFCN, during last November there were 15 interventions by members of the religious community in response to attempted suicide and cases of serious crimes including rape, armed robbery and murder.
Affected persons, victims and relatives, accordingly, were counselled.
The Guyana Police Force has launched Operation Dragnet nationwide. The exercise includes all members of the Joint Services such as the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Fire Service and the Prison Service and the GPF.
All members of the police force, who are not engaged in core policing functions, would be deployed to give an increased “robust presence” to boost public confidence and ensure safety of the general populace. This will add to the “Christmas Police Security Plan” initiated recently by the GPF.
The seven-month long Operation Dragnet was also partly in response to security concerns that have been raised by sections of the business community.
