Divers are now combing the bottom of the Mazaruni River in search of the bodies of two men who disappeared after a head-on boat collision that occurred sometime around 19:45 on Saturday.
The missing men have been identified as Trevor Persaud and Roy Roopnarine, both of Itabali. Cleon Fortune, also of Itabali, who was in Persaud’s boat at the time of the collision, was injured and was treated at the Bartica Hospital.
According to a police source, the two missing men were in separate boats; Persaud was heading from Bartica while Roopnarine was heading in the opposite direction.
The source continued that, Persaud’s boat was supposedly on the wrong side of the river, resulting in his boat colliding with Roopnarine’s bow. The trio was then catapulted into the river.
The operator of another boat which was ahead of Roopnarine, heard the crash and upon investigating he saw the unmanned boat circling about uncontrollably in the river. The boat operator managed to rescue the wounded Fortune. An alarm was then raised and a search party was assembled and an initial search continued until 1 am yesterday.
The search resumed around 6am, and later in the day, two divers were deployed to search the floorof the river. Up to press time yesterday, the bodies were yet to be found.
Fortune, who was discharged from hospital was taken into custody and is assisting police with their investigations.
