Pepsi Hornets who trailed the Guyana Defence Force coming into the final day of competition on Saturday in the Guyana Telephone Telegraph / Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) Tens League, did just what they were suppose to do, beat Yamaha Caribs to put their destiny into their own hands.
The victorious Pepsi Hornets squad pose with the winning trophy and medals in the presence of GRFU President Peter Green (3rd right) and supporters on Saturday.
They cruised past the Caribs 22-0 to move to 15 points with only the Guyana Defence Force, who had started the day two points ahead of them, realistically capable of overhauling them if they got past University of Guyana Wolves which they failed to do handing the Hornets the title, at the National Park Rugby Field.
Rickford Cummings went over the backline twice and made a conversion to lead the charge for Hornets, while Blaze Bailey and Troy Bascom ran for a try apiece to cement the onesided encounter.
The Army who needed to defeat the Wolves to secure the title failed in their bid, succumbing 12-17 to a determined Wolves pack to end the League on 13 points.
Joshua Griffith bundled over the line twice for two tries, while Rondell McArthur scored a try as well.
Godfrey Broomes converted once to cmplete their tally.
For the soldiers, Tryton Braithwaite and Patrick King scored a try each, while Dwayne Schroeder made one conversion in the loss.
