-Straughn dominates individual awards
Newly-crowned champions St. Stephen’s reversed last year’s result against Stella Maris after beating them 3-1 in a penalty shootout following a nil-nil stalemate in regulation and extra times yesterday as this year’s Smalta /
Ministry of Public Health Girls Pee Wee Schools Football Competition concluded, at the Carifesta Sports Complex.
In a repeat of last year’s final which saw Stella Maris prevail in a penalty shootout as well, the Charlestown-based side came out victorious this time to be crowned the new champions against their nemesis.
Taking full advantage of their chance to kick first in the penalty shootout, St. Stephen’s immediately asserted pressure on their opponents by scoring.
This meant that Stella Maris had to score to keep the contest squared, but they failed to net the spot kick with goalkeeper Odelli Straughn making a fine save.
Up strode the next kicker for St. Stephen’s and she scored to place immense pressure on Stella Maris’ next kicker and last year’s hero Ludesha Reynolds, who calmly slotted in her effort to pull them within one.
Her successful attempt only brought brief relief as St. Stephen’s next player netted which gave them a comfortable 3-1 lead, meaning that Stella Maris’ next player had to score to keep them in the contest and she failed to deliver handing St. Stephen’s the coveted trophy.
In addition to the championship trophy, St. Stephen’s will benefit from a school project worth $100,000, while Stella Maris received the runners-up accolade and $50,000 towards a school project.
Earlier, North Georgetown secured the third spot after defeating South Ruimveldt 3-1 on penalty
kicks following a 1-1 result in regulation and extra times.
Shaquanna Drakes netted for North Georgetown in the 33rd minute, while Lenisa John responded three minutes later for South Ruimveldt to level the proceedings.
North Georgetown took home$30,000 towards a school project, while South Ruimveldt collected $20,000 and a trophy for the same purpose and was also adjudged the most disciplined team.
Straughn was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the event and the Best Goalkeeper, while Shamiya Daniels of North Georgetown and John of South Ruimveldt shared the highest goalscorers award with six apiece.
Meanwhile, Ansa Mc Al’s Brand Manager Anjeta Hinds in brief remarks urged the girls to continue to excel not only on the field, but in every sphere of endeavour throughout their lives.
