The US Embassy has experienced a spike in applications and in turn, more visitors’ visas are being
issued to Guyanese. Bryan Hunt, the United States Deputy Chief of Missions in Guyana said that he suspects that the spike is largely due to the economic climate which he sees as favourable.
He said, “We have a spike in applications from Guyanese to travel to the United States which results in more Visas being issued for visits to the United States. My suspicion is that more people have more disposable income and have more interest in travel these days.”
In terms of return rates, Hunt said that based on internal studies done regularly by the embassy, Guyana has one of the highest return rates of visitors to the United States.
“The vast majority of Guyanese, who go to the United States use their visas appropriately, remain within status and they return to Guyana at the end of their temporary visits.”
However, Hunt noted that there are some cases of Guyanese who are issued a ten-year visitors’ visa and they decide to stay. This is criminal, he said.
“Opting to stay would be illegal. A visitors’ visa allows one to go for a short trip for business, tourism and to visit family; anyone using that for another purpose or to stay beyond the stipulated period of entry that has been granted by our immigration department, would be in violation of status and would have committed a crime which makes them the subject of deportation back to Guyana.”
He warned that such a breach is illegal and can result not only in deportation, but upon return to local shores the person would face a potential “Life time ban on being allowed to travel to the United States again. So it’s not a good Idea to misuse one’s tourist Visa.”
While Hunt could not speak to specific cases, he said the Embassy in such cases is allowed some privacy considerations on the US part, but he did let up that very occasionally the US authorities are made aware that there are some illegal people.
In such circumstances when it comes to our knowledge, it is the responsibility of our immigration services to handle the deportation back to Guyana, and when they do return to Guyana they do not obtain another visa to travel to the United States.” (Mondale Smith)
