Sherfene Rutherford and Jeetendra Sookdeo struck half centuries as Georgetown defeated West
Demerara by 53 runs when play in the Cricket Guyana Inc. (CGI) Local Franchise League 50-over tournament continued yesterday.
After deciding to take first strike at Bourda, Georgetown lost opener Shemroy Barrington (06) with the score on 16, but opener Sookdeo shared in a second wicket stand of 55 with Andrew Lyght to steady the innings on a decent pitch before Lyght went for 25.
Kwame Crosse was then bowled by Richie Looknauth for four, leaving the score at 87-3 before Sookdeo and Rutherford consolidated to frustrate the opposition with a fourth wicket stand of 74. Sookdeo timed the ball nicely and struck five four’s before he was dismissed for 63.
The left-handed Rutherford hit the ball with power, smashing three fours and a similar number of sixes before he departed for 63. David Dick and Kemol Savory hit 32 and 24 not out respectively as Georgetown amassed 241-7 off their allotted overs. Malcolm Hubbard claimed 3-32.
West Demerara threatened somewhat but were bowled out for 188 in 48 overs in reply. Ganesh Narine cracked two fours and two sixes in scoring 52 while opener Yetesh Dhanpaul hit 31 and Travis Persaud 19. Left arm spinner Devon Lord snared 3-32, Kellon Carmichael 2-29 and Sookdeo 2-33.
At Enmore – Upper Corentyne overcame Essequibo by 41 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern Method. Ricardo Adams removed openers Loyydel Lewis (04) and Balchan Baldeo (08) while Trevon Garraway accounted for Jason Sinclair (01) to reduce Upper Corentyne for 23-3, batting first.
However Rajiv Ivan and Jonathan Foo added 77 for the fourth wicket to repair the early damage; Foo was lbw to Anthony Adams for 31. Ivan mixed aggression with defense and hammered five fours off 111 balls before he was lbw to Nokta Moses (1-43) for 65.
The Essequibians fought back to restrict their opponents somewhat- Upper Corentyne were bowled out for 188 in 49 overs; Arif Chan contributed 26. Ricardo Adams captured 2-35, Garraway and Anthony Adams had 2-38 apiece.
Essequibo were set a revised target of 147 in 29 overs after 90 minutes of playing time was lost due to the meals arriving late for the players and officials. When their reply got underway, both Royan Fredericks and Kevon Boodie took boundaries off pacer Clinton Pestano before off-spinner Rajiv Ivan had Boodie caught and bowled for 10 with the score on 27.
Ivan then removed Ricardo Peters (04) while Baldeo sent back Parmesh Parsotam (04), leaving Essequibo at 43-3. Following the dismissal of Fredericks, bowled by Foo for 29, Essequibo’s innings failed to gain the much needed impetus as they finished on 106-9; Anthony Adams scored 20. Foo 2-22 and Ivan 2-27 were the pick of the bowlers.
At Albion – Lower Corentyne/New Amsterdam/Canje continued their unbeaten run as they disposed of East Coast Demerara by 56 runs. Batting first, the home team was bowled out for 189 in 45.5 overs.
Gajanand Singh struck 34 while Joemal La Fleur hit 33 and Eugene La Fleur 32. Steven Sankar snared 4-37 and Anthony Ifill 3-34. In reply, East Coast Demerara were bowled out for 143 in the 43rd over. Brian Sattaur smashed 60 (7×4) while Steve Ramdass and Steven Sankar chipped in with 21 each. Eugene La Fluer took 2-18, Royston Crandon 2-28 and Devon Clements 2-40.
At Port Mourant – East Bank Demerara/Upper Demerara went down to West Berbice
by nine wickets. East Bank/Upper Demerara got to 207-8 off their reduced 45 overs due to a late start. Danny Narayan stroked a fluent 100 which included four fours and two maximums and Leonard Caleb made 36. Bowling for West Berbice, Waqar Hassan claimed 3-26 while Krishnadat Ramoo had 3-32.
In reply, West Berbice cruised to 210-1 in just 36 overs. Skipper Kandasammy Surujnarine, hit a shot-filled 104 not out; including six fours, while Avishkar Seewkaran hit 50-the pair added 136 for the first wicket to put their team on course. Raphael Estriado made 36 not out. The competition continues on Saturday.
