Upper Corentyne, Essequibo, West Demerara and New Amsterdam Canje registered victories when the Cricket Guyana Inc Local Franchise League 50-over tournament commenced yesterday with four matches.
Upper Corentyne defeated East Coast Demerara by two wickets. East Coast were sent packing for 78 in 34 overs after they were inserted at Enmore.
Steady bowling by the Berbicians reduced East Coast to 38-6, but Paul Wintz and Ramnarine Chatura attempted to repair the damage with a seven-wicket stand of 35. But after Chatura went for 14 and Wintz departed for 20, no other batsman offered any resistance; Bhaskar Yadram had earlier made 16 as Shawn Pereira claimed 3-17, Eon Hooper 2-5, Jonathan Foo 2-18 and Balchan Baldeo 2-22.
Upper Corentyne found themselves in early trouble at 19-7 before Sharaz Ramcharran (18) and Joshua Ramsammy (17) carried the score to 44 to keep their team hopes alive. East Coast struck again by removing them both, but the level-headed Hooper saw his team home with an unbeaten 19 as they finished on 81-8 in 39.2 overs. Gavin Moriah snared 3-23, Rajindra Naikbaran 2-13 and Wintz 2-16.
At Bourda, Essequibo overcame West Berbice by 43 runs. Essequibo posted 190-9 off their allotted 50 overs, batting first. Anthony Adams struck 53 (3×4,5×6), Ricardo Adams 35 (4×4), Kevon Boodie 31 and Ricardo Peters 23. Steffan Adams claimed 3-21 and Kevin Jawahir 2-23.
West Berbice were bowled out for 145 in 45.3 overs in reply. Avishkar Seewkarran made 37 and Raffell Estraido 30. Royan Fredericks and Ricardo Adams picked up three wickets each and Anthony Adams 2-19.
At Wales, West Demerara got the better of East Bank Demerara by four wickets. Batting first, East Bank managed 178 all out in 41.3 overs. Ershad Ali got 38, Bhojnarine Singh 28, Shawn Pooran 25 and Stephan Browne 21. Akshaya Persaud grabbed 4-35 and Mahendra Danraj 2-39.
West Demerara replied with 179-6 in 38.3 overs. Persaud stroked 74 not out, Thburaj Ramdass and Keemo Paul 22 each. Browne and Ali had two scalps each.
At Albion, New Amsterdam Canje beat Georgetown by five wickets. Georgetown took first strike and were skittled for 94 in 41.2 overs. Kwame Crosse scored 39, Kemol Savory 14 and Travis Blyden 12; Royston Crandon captured 3-9, Romario Shepherd 3-12 and Jomal La Fleur 2-17. New Amsterdam Canje responded with 95-5 in 17.5 overs. La Fleur led with 40 and Devon Clements 25. Kellon Carmichael bagged 4-31. The competition continues today.
