A second suspect was yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of businessman, Farouk Ghanie Persaud, a/k ‘Brother’, proprietor of Hamson’s General Store.
Seventeen-year-old Kemo Tyron Evans, of Lot 1 Water Street, Bagostown, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is accused of murdering the businessman between April 15 and April 16, at his Lot 97 Collingswood Avenue, Nandy Park residence, during the course of a robbery.
On April 16, Hamid’s lifeless body was found lying at the back of his home next to a kennel where he kept his dog, a German shepherd. His firearm and cellular phone were missing, as well as expensive jewellery he often wore. However, detectives found almost a million dollars in the murdered man’s home.
Evans, who had no legal representation, will make his next court appearance on January 29, 2016, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Bharrat Mangru informed the court that two statements are still outstanding from the police file.
In August, Floyd Anthony Rammit, who worked as Persaud’s handyman, was charged with the man’s murder. Rammit, of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara had reportedly provided the police with a detailed statement on how he and his accomplices killed and robbed the businessman.
He is facing Magistrate Leron Daly in the Providence Magistrate’s Court. The Magistrate has set a date in January for the commencement of a preliminary inquiry (PI).
According to reports, on April 15, the 56-year-old businessman left his home and went to his place of business on Regent Street. Persaud returned home around 18:00hrs that day. About 20:00hrs, three men were seen
at his home. Shortly after the men were seen by eyewitnesses leaving Persaud’s home, hurriedly.
On April 16, around 07:20hrs, neighbours found Persaud’s body lying at the back of his yard in a pool of blood. There were wounds to his left chest and cheek.
The police were summoned and found that the firearm, cell phone and other items belonging to the man were missing.
The businessman was taken to the East Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigations were carried out and led to Rammit being charged with Persaud’s murder. A few months later, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Evans in connection with the killing.
Relatives of Persaud had posted a $3M reward for the arrest of the wanted man.
