– NE La Penitence, East Front Road, Old School Ballers also advance
West Front Road led the pack heading to the knockout phase following the conclusion of the group stage of the Georgetown Zone of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition which continued on Saturday night, at Demerara Park.
They were joined by North East La Penitence, East Front Road and Old School Ballers who all secured their places for the business end of the competition which begins on Wednesday, at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
Played before a capacity crowd that witnessed an hour-long invigorating musical performance from Guyana’s reggae star Natural Black, who thrilled the fans with a sneak preview of his song for Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary set for next year, West Front Road-Gold is Money cemented their place in the next round after coasting to a 2-0 win over Alexander Village.
The inspirational Hubert Pedro opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a thunderous right-footer into the lower left corner.
Randolph Wagner followed up his effort with a goal in the 20th minute, firing into the left corner from a pass delivered from the right flank.
The most entertaining of the evening featured North East La Penitence and Albouystown ‘A’ who rallied from a 4-0 deficit only to lose 4-3 and in the process were eliminated.
Calvin Moore booted in a pair of goals in the third and 16th minutes, while Shaquille Browne and Webby Webster netted in the 12th and 15th minutes for North East La Penitence.
For Albouystown ‘A’, Darren Benjamin lashed in a brace in the 18th and 19th minutes, while Kemo Smith added the other in the 17th minute.
East Front Road secured their spot in the next round with a comfortable 2-0 triumph over Castello Housing Scheme. Dillon Kelly gave them a positive start with a strike in the 13th minute and returned two minutes later to seal the deal.
Old School Ballers appearing in the competition for the first time registered an upset win over Globe Yard 1-0 for a place in the next round with Junior Jordan’s strike on the stroke of full time supplying the lifeline.
Debutants Channel-9-Warriors also made it to the next round after playing to a goalless stalemate in their clash against Cross Street, while West Back Road and Laing Avenue encounter produced a similar result with the former escaping to the next round.
Albouystown ‘B’ followed their ‘A’ counterparts out of the competition after playing to a 1-1 stalemate with Festival City Warriors.
Albouystown ‘B’ needing a win to keep their hopes alive suffered an early setback when Jermaine Tinch fifth minute strike gave the Warriors the early lead, before Chris Marshall equalised in the 15th minute, but the scoreline stayed that way until the final whistle sounded to send to equalize following
Defending champion North Ruimveldt and Leopold Street scrapped to a 0-0 draw in an encounter that the result that could not affect their advancement.
The winning team will take home $500,000, the championship trophy and the right to represent the zone at the national tournament, while the second, third and fourth placed finishers receive $200,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively.
