Seven years after Carifesta X drew to a conclusion, the Theatre Guild is still owed $1.5M by the Carifesta Secretariat for rental of the building.
Chairman of the Theatre Guild, Dr. Paloma Mohamed, according to the Carifesta X forensic audit report, recommended payment for several organizations that were not under her scope. Amongst those recommended for payment of monies owed are, National Media Publication for advertising, CNS Television channel 6 for advertising, Vieira Communication and Nigel Fraser-HGP T.V. CH-16 Advertising. However, Mohamed at the time (and still has) made no recommendations for payment of monies owed to the theatre.
In 2008, there were also complaints from several employees of the secretariat as well as several performers who would have performed in “Legend of the silk cotton tree,” regarding the issue of non-payments.
Payments were reportedly made to the Knightrider Bus Service, Classique dancers and the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha by the Ministry of Culture for their services while artists “were left out.”
Amongst the performers were Sonia Yarde and Godfrey Naughton. They, along with several others had staged a protest for the monies owed to them.
Godfrey Naughton in a telephone interview said that he along with several other artists staged a protest as they felt they were being disrespected. Two weeks after the protests, “the money was found.”
Payment was subsequently made to those who had protested but no payment was made to Theatre Guild and several persons, up to this day, reportedly have not been paid. “He only pay who he fight up, he ain pay the rest,” said Naughton.
Calls made to contact Dr. Paloma were unsuccessful.
