International Basketball rivalry between Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda began in August 1981 when the two countries clashed at the inaugural Caricom Championship at the National Sports Hall but the first time the two rivals met overseas was July 2nd 2000 at the 15thCaricom Championship in Bridgetown Barbados.
Guyana playing under the captaincy of two times Caricom All Star Guard and local legend Lugard Mohan won 74 to 64. Power Centre Lorenzo (fudge) Withrite lit up the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium with 17 pts and 9 rebounds, the late Israeli Pro Deryck Boyd had fans on their feet with 8 pts, 8 rebounds and 7 steals; for Antigua and Barbuda David Davis had a game high 26 pts, Mario Davis supported with 16 pts. The next time the two countries clashed was August 2007 at the CAC Tournament in Puerto Rico; Guyana led by Antric Klaiber won 78 to 68.
The Flambouyant Gordon Klaiber had fans at the Hector Sola Bezares coliseum in a frenzy. He had six three Pointers in his 34 pts to go with 9 rebounds. For Antigua and Barbuda Clinton Joshua scored 21 pts, and pulled down 15 rebounds, Lennox McCoy had 16 pts, and 11 rebounds. The two teams met again four years later, 2011, at the Caricom championship in Nassau Bahamas and this time the Antiguans triumph 76 to 51. Lennox McCoy top scored for Antigua and Barbuda with 16 pts, Wayne Walker 15 pts and Melvin Hodge 15 pts. For Guyana, Keron McKenzie had a game high 21 pts and Dwayne Roberts 12 pts.
This International clash took place at the Isaac Kennedy gymnasium.
The teams met in 2002 in St. John’s but the Guyana team basically was a rookie squad and there were no overseas players and regular Captain Lugard Mohan sat out because of a broken nose he suffered in a contest against Anguilla. Please find below a summary of that 2002 two match series.
Playing at the J.S.C Complex, Johnson’s village, Antigua & Barbuda won 87 to 75 Steve Neils Jr 17 pts, Andrew Ifill 13 pts, Bruce Davis 13 pts.
Game two at the same venue, Antigua won 94 to 81 with Mario Davis 21 pts, while for Guyana; Bruce Davis had a game high 24 pts, Steve Neils Jr 17 pts, Rudy James 13 pts 11 rebounds, Andrew Ifill 10 pts and Marlon Peniston 8 pts 8 rebounds. (Charwayne Walker)
