The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is alleging that a Government Minister created 20 small companies to bid for Government contracts. Yesterday, PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee, made the accusation.
He said that recent “revelation” that “a particular Government Minister has allegedly created 20 small companies to bid for government contracts stinks to the high heavens.”
This is not the first time that this accusation came from the PPP. A few weeks ago, Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo, made the “revelation” at a press conference. At that forum, Kaieteur News asked Jagdeo to name the Minister but he said he couldn’t.
The former President said that the story was unfolding and that there was much more to be revealed. He said that in time, all the “shocking and nasty revelations will be made.”
One of the daily newspapers carried an article quoting Jagdeo on his allegations. This is the “revelation’ that Rohee referred to yesterday.
He said that that revelation “coincides with an earlier statement made during a post-Cabinet briefing in mid-October, that a number of small companies have benefitted from Government’s policy allowing small companies to benefit from several contracts amounting to over $1B which the public was informed was “part of a package to stimulate the economy”.
He added, “All of this was reflected in a daily newspaper headline which screamed; Tender Board facing deluge of post-budget tenders for state contracts”.
Rohee, like Jagdeo, was asked to identify the Minister who is creating these companies and just like Jagdeo did, he declined to give a name.
However, the General Secretary said that “many of the beneficiaries, we are reliably informed, are persons who allegedly made large financial contributions to the elections war-chest of the APNU+AFC and are now on the receiving end as payback time.” (Abena Rockcliffe)
