As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has been holding military expositions across the country.
On Saturday and Sunday expositions were held at the New Amsterdam Municipal ground,
Republic Road, New Amsterdam and at Hopetown, West Coast Berbice.
Medical outreaches saw residents in the respective areas getting an opportunity to have a complete medical checkup. Residents were treated for a number of ailments while some had dental checks done. There were other interventions. There were also performances by the GDF Borderline Steel pan.
The highlights of the days’ activities were the parachute jumps by eight paratroopers of the GDF Special Forces Squadron.
The paratroopers were released in two batches of four from a height of 7000 feet. They actually took about four minutes from time of release to the time they landed on the ground.
All of the jumps were successful as they skillfully made their way down. Some of the paratroopers were flawless in their landing and brought loud cheers from the large crowds that assembled at the different locations.
The paratroopers involved in the exercise were Jump Master Major Lloyd Souvenir, Assistant Jump Master Sheldon Howell; Captain Paul Singh, Captain Avenesh Deonarine, Warrant Officer Sherlock Rigby, Staff Sergeant Vivian Joyce, Staff Sergeant Cleveland O’Brien and Corporal Rocky Watson.
The activity was coordinated by Major Robert Burns, Major Marvin Chichester and Captain Orwain Sandy.
During the activity all the emergency services were activated – electricity was shut off in the area while a GPL crew was on standby. The police were also in attendance along with the Fire Service and an ambulance.
