-double header on today at No.5 ground
The GTT Round Robin / Knockout Football Competition is expected to kick-off today with a double header, at the No.5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
In the opening game at 18:00 hrs, New Amsterdam United take on Linden-based Milerock and this encounter will be followed by the clash between another team from Linden Winners Connection and Berbice’s Rosignol United.
Yesterday, at a meeting organised to introduce the teams representatives at the Spice Garden Restaurant on Pike Street, Co-Director of the Petra Organisation Troy Mendonca gave a brief outline of the tournament which is being played among eight teams.
Mendonca whose Organisation is responsible for staging the tournament said that while they’ve had to make adjustments to their original format, he still envisages a keenly contested and exciting tournament.
Also present at the Meeting were Guyana Football Federation Technical Director Claude Bolton, New GPC Inc Marketing Manager Jagmohan Bassoo and Finance Manager Dwayne Lovell.
Bolton, who made brief remarks, commended the Organisers for their flexibility and ability in having to reshape their original format following developments that occurred recently.
In response to queries about whether the current Stag Elite League would be able to sustain the kind of support that it is enjoying now if other tournaments were being played simultaneously, the TD said that once football is being played he is happy.
He pointed out that the need to structure football to resemble a business model has become necessary and as long as the powers that be decide to go in that direction then there is every chance that the landscape will improve.
Bassooo whose Company has come on board said they were elated to do so and at the same time contribute to the development of the sport and young people.
“We believe in investing in sports and more directly young people and we will continue to do so,” Bassoo assured.
Lovell, who is responsible for doling out the finances in his short remarks, echoed the sentiments expressed by Bassoo, adding that he wished all the teams well and hope that the high standard that typifies the Petra Oganisation will be on display once again.
Lovell then presented the teams with a bag containing products manufactured and distributed by the Company.
