Three workers attached to the Guyana Gold Fields are counting their lucky stars after surviving a horrific vehicular accident that occurred around 06:30 hrs yesterday at Aurora, Region Seven.
The vehicle they were traveling in, a land cruiser, and a truck collided head-on.
The survivors are Carton Powers, 54; Junior Lee, 38, and Mark Anthony. Anthony was treated and sent away while the others remained at a private city hospital, nursing minor injuries.
According to information received, the three men are machine operators for Guyana Goldfields. At the time of the accident they were heading to a worksite to inspect a machine.
They were leaving their camp which is located 17 miles from the worksite. There are reports that the driver of the truck was coming up a hill and Powers, who was driving the land cruiser was coming around a turn when both vehicles collided.
At the hospital yesterday, Powers explained that the truck was on the wrong side of the road. “I was coming around a turn and the driver was up the hill. He was on the wrong side of the road and all I heard was a bang,” Powers said.
Powers and Lee could only recall hearing a loud “bang.” They could not say what happened after the impact.
Investigations are ongoing.
