Police are investigating the daylight robbery of a Port Mourant grocery and some customers which occurred around 14:50 hours on Friday.
The bandits escaped with over $6M in cash and jewelry, using a motorbike which they had earlier arrived on.
The heist occurred at the Gobin’s Grocery Store at Port Mourant, Corentyne. The robbers both of whom were armed with handguns posed as customers before holding up the proprietor and customers, including an overseas-based Guyanese and a Banks DIH sales man who were in the shop at the time.
Rhada Gobin told the media that when the bandits struck she was in the process of counting out some money (over $1.1M) to hand over to Banks DIH Limited.
Some persons were in the shop when the two neatly dressed boys walked in. They reportedly asked for some beverages and subsequently pulled out a gun and proceeded to stick up everybody in the shop.
They targeted the overseas-based Guyanese.
The men using expletives discharged a shot in the air and demanded that the people hand over all the money. The men produced a bag and told the woman to put everything inside.
The woman was repeatedly struck on her head by one of the intruders. They were instructed to hand over everything.
The men took the $1.1M and a further $.3.5M she had stashed to pay debtors.
The customers were also robbed of foreign and Guyana currency.
Ironically some person had gone to the shop to change some US money. The customers were also relieved of gold jewelry and cellular phones.
Before escaping the bandits grabbed an overseas-based Guyanese and used her as a human shield.
One person is in custody as the investigation continues.
The entity has been robbed twice before, once in September 2014 when bandits cut a hole in the wall to get into the house.
