GNIC 125-5 replying to TSC’s 233
By Sean Devers
At Malteenoes, the home team were in dire straits on 12-2 in their second innings still 57 runs
away from an innings defeat against UG, while GNIC were in a precarious position on 125-5 in reply to TSC’S 233, still 109 away from first innings points at the GDF ground when the first day of their GCA’s Noble House Seafoods two-day quarter final games ended yesterday.
At MSC, the hosts were bowled out for 130 with Shaquille Moseley top scoring with an unbeaten 30 in a 26-run last wicket stand with Jomal Mckenzie (4). ICC Americas batsman Akeem Dodson (29) and Skipper Steven Sankar (26) also offered token resistance to off-spinner Dennis Heywood (5-48).
Lloyd George (3-45) and Ray Newtown (2-14) supported with the ball for UG who took a 69-run first innings lead by making 199 all out. Sankar had three expensive wickets, while Nichosie Barker had 2-5 for MSC who lost two late afternoon wickets when Barker (0) and Jewel Alleyne (5) fell in the space of a run before bad light stopped play with Floyd Rawlings (1) and Dodson (4) at the crease.
Earlier, after Barker (14) departed at 16-1 as no MSC batsman passed 30. Vishaul Narayan (10) was the only other batsman to reach double figures as the competition’s leading wicket taker, Haywood decimated the batsmen in sweltering heat.
UG’s Leon Williams began with an audacious whip off his pads followed by an elegant push for a couple of boundaries off McKenzie before George (0) edged Delon Dalrymple to second slip at 8-1 and Provendralall Singh fell for 14 as the Students started shakily.
Former Guyana U-15 batsman Williams (28) caressed Dalrymple past his ankles for a gorgeous four before he was taken at slip off Moseley who also dismissed Dwayne Dodson (19).
A boundary off Sankar from Shalim give UG first innings points while a six, which landed on the roof of the Tutorial Secondary School off Sankar, brought up Shalim’s 50.
Shalim pulled a nice juicy full toss from Rawlings for Barker to hold a magnificent catch on the square-leg boundary to end his wonderful 73 with five fours and four sixes at 192-9. Shalim shared a 47-run ninth wicket stand with George who made 21 not out.
At the GDF ground, Adrian Hinds (10) fell at 19-1 before Charwayne McPherson (16), Sunil Singh (30) and Rayn Hemraj (27) all wasted good starts as Orlando Fraser grabbed two wickets to break the 43-run fourth wicket stand between Hemraj and Devon Nandan.
Nandan hit Clyde Butts for six in his first over before clobbering the 58 year-old former Test player for two fours and a six in his second over which cost 20. Nandan took a liking to the off-spinner and dumped his for another six before he eventually fell to Butts for 59, decorated with four fours and four sixes, at 156-5.
Azim Azeez made 37 before he was run out, but only Joshua Wilson (12) got into double figures after that. Butts (4-65) and Frazer (3-77) were both expensive for GNIC who were led to their close of play score by 41 from Joshua Persaud and 26 from Ryan Shun before they both were removed by off-spinner Wilson .
The final day is scheduled to commence at 10:30hrs today.
