William Nurse a grounds-man of Queen’s College, remains bed ridden more than a month after being knocked off his bicycle into the Lamaha Canal by a car allegedly driven by a presidential Guard staffer.
Nurse, 53, said the accident occurred on Lamaha Street on August 30 while he was transporting a female companion. Both Nurse and the woman whom he identified as Lisa Kaydoo, 37 were seriously injured and hospitalized.
From his hospital bed he told this publication that he is not happy with the way things have turned out.
Nurse said he is unable to walk and is on the verge of losing his job.
“I have not seen a police come to take no statement and nobody ain’t come to visit nor offer no assistance from the Presidential Guard till now.”
Lisa, his companion, has been discharged but he says he is not aware if she was offered compensation. He is willing to settle the matter once adequate compensation is offered.
His entire life has been devoted to manicuring grounds around Guyana such as the Gandhi Youth Organization ground, the Georgetown Cricket Club, Everest Club and at Queen’s College.
As QC’s caretaker, he has resided in the compound for some 32 years, but because of the accident he has been asked to find new accommodation.
The driver was detained following the accident and placed on bail according to the Chief Traffic Officer Dion Moore. He said that the file on the matter was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution.
There are reports that the driver took the vehicle without permission from State House.
Nurse and Lisa Kaydoo, 37, were reportedly hurled from their bicycle into a canal.
Kaydoo reportedly suffered a fractured jaw and arm, and head and spinal injuries, while Nurse sustained head injuries and lacerations.
