Vendors operating on and around the road shoulders of the old Anna Regina market will be able to continue to do so for at least a couple of days more. The Ministry of Communities has put a hold on the standing order to remove them.
Phase one of the removal of encumbrances that served as an obstruction to traffic and the free flow of people began Friday morning when the authorities targeted several stallholders, in the old Anna Regina market.
Under the supervision of Commander of “G” Division, Kevin Adonis, several tarpaulins which were encumbering the traffic were removed from two vendors.
The removal of the roadside vendors would be the next phase of the operation.
Vendors have already staged two protests signalling their disagreement with the Town Council’s decision to remove them off the road and to relocate them at the New Cotton Field market.
They are maintaining that the new location is out of the hub of commercial activities in the Township. They are further insisting that they continue to make a livelihood on the road.
The Anna Regina Town Council which has been engaged in a series of meetings to remove those vendors off the road is maintaining that road side vending is illegal (Yannason Duncan)
