… Asst Supt released on $250,000 bail
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Terrence Browne was yesterday granted bail in the sum of $250,000 on a charge of receiving money from three policemen to drop charges against Rennison Park, for a drug trafficking offence.
The three policemen were Constable Ray Drepaul Saul, of Eversham, Corentyne; Constable Trevon McKenzie, of Princeton, Corentyne; and Corporal Shawn McPhoy, of 174 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt.
The allegation against Browne was that between September 10 and September 11, at Salton Village, Corentyne, Berbice, he obtained a sum of cash from Police Constable, Shawn McPhoy as an inducement to forego charges against Rennison Park.
The ranks had reportedly stopped a vehicle in which Park was said to be transporting some drugs to the eastern border. McPhoy allegedly obtained the money from Park.
Browne pleaded not guilty to the charge yesterday after an appearance before Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Although ASP Browne was granted pre-trial liberty, he was instructed to lodge his passport.
Police Constables Drepaul Saul, Trevon McKenzie and Corporal Shawn McPhoy, were charged with corruptly obtaining $6M from Rennison Park as consideration to drop charges against him for trafficking in narcotics.
Drepaul, McKenzie and McPhoy pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to prison.
The lawmen are expected to make their next court appearance on October 12, at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.
Police Corporal, Deniro Jones presented the prosecution’s case. Jones successfully opposed bail for the two police constables and the corporal after he contended that there is a likelihood they may tamper with the prosecution’s witnesses.
Further, Jones informed the court that ASP Browne obtained $500,000 from the ranks after they had received the bribe from Park.
The Prosecutor informed the court that two other police officers received a bribe of $500,000 but they returned the money.
Jones pointed out that investigators are seeking advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as to the way forward.
An Attorney for Browne during a bail application told the court that his client has 30 years of service in the police force. The lawyer said that Browne, 48, is a father of 10, who resides at Lot 273 Sisters Village, West Demerara.
Additionally, the Attorney told the court that his client’s wife is a Police Sergeant.
