Saturday saw the official opening of Beepat’s new warehouse facility in Guyana. In attendance at the ceremony were Prime Minister, Moses Nagamootoo, and several other Government officials. There were also trade attachés from the United States, Suriname, Great Britain and China.
Two years ago on October 11 the Beepats warehouse in Ogle went up in flames. The building was completely destroyed. That forced the owner, Madho Beepat, to rent warehouse space around the city in an effort to continue doing business. Although expensive, there did not seem to be another option at the time.
Searches for land of the size the business wanted in or around Georgetown were not successful. Most of these were allocated for private housing. Years of searching for available land space for their warehouse was finally accomplished when they contacted Joycelyn Dow, who then spent months persuading the owners of space now occupied by Beepats to part with their land.
In April, the erection of the main warehouse building began and has since been completed and equipped with all the modern facilities for storage, handling and inventory control systems.
In 1960, Madho Beepat became the second businessman in the area of Regent Street when he built his first store, M. Beepat and Sons. Kristopher Beepat revealed the humble beginnings of the now successful business empire founded by his grandfather, Madho Beepat.
This began “some 62 years ago in 1953 in a stall rented from the City Council at La Penitence Market. It was all started by one man who had this vision, who was prepared to work hard, to build and bestow to his family a business empire that goes beyond the boundaries of Guyana.”
Twenty-five years of successful business in Guyana drove Beepat to open an aluminium windows and doors manufacturing company in St. Lucia. This entity is currently being run by his two sons, Neil and Brian Beepat.
A similar venture was opened in Grenada by another son, Ahsan Beepat. Another windows and doors factory opened its doors three years ago upon the return of Madho Beepat while his daughter is set to open a solar panel supply company in Guyana later this year.
The Beepat family has over the years begun businesses relating to aluminium windows and doors manufacturing, garments, party rentals, delivery service, manufacturing of disposable items, gold mining extraction and fishing.
These businesses, headed by several members of the Beepat family were not all successful but it is said that they are quite proud for attempting them.
Beepats is one of the leading product distributors in Guyana. The products the company distributes can be found in the smallest corner shops in the country areas. They can also be found in modern, large-scale supermarkets in major metropolitan areas.
Beepats is the recognized agent for Reckitt Benckiser (North America and United Kingdom), Nestle Caribbean Incorporated, Unilever Bestfoods (UK), H.J. Heinz Company Limited/Complan Foods Limited and CIC/N.V.
