…third time victim robbed in 11 months
An early morning robbery at the Meadow Bank wharf has left fish glue trader, Omar Esau of 1757 Providence, East Bank Demerara calling on police to tighten security at the wharf.
Esau has been robbed for the third time in 11 months by gun toting bandits at the wharf.
The unmasked bandits, one of whom was armed with a gun, carted off $380,000 and a cell phone belonging to Esau.
Esau, a 49-year-old father of five, was robbed at around 03:50hrs, last Saturday, minutes after he had parked his minibus.
Esau, who has been visiting the wharf to purchase fish glue for the past 10 years said that he is still traumatized.
He told Kaieteur News that he had just parked his mini bus and was seated in the driver’s seat, when he heard a loud bang on the window.
He related that seconds after the window glass shattered. Before the bandits pounced on their victim, they discharged a shot into the air and warned persons “not to *$@ing move”.
After, one of the men approached the vehicle and pointed a gun to Esau’s head, ordering him to exit the vehicle.
He said that he did not resist.
“I had to come out the vehicle and they searched my pocket”, Esau added.
Esau added that the bandit kept the gun to his head until he was out the bus. The unarmed bandit then searched the vehicle. When the bandits were satisfied with their loot they made good their escape on foot.
“When they (the bandits) gone, I took a taxi and went to the Ruimveldt Police Station and reported the matter”.
He said that upon arrival at the station, the police took a statement from him and rushed to the crime scene.
Unfortunately, the bandits had already made good their escape leaving several persons in shock. He pointed out that the ordeal lasted for about five minutes.
Esau said that after the incident he learnt that Pooran Singh, a fisherman of Unity, East Coast Demerara was injured. He was grazed to the abdomen by the bullet the gunman had discharged. He said, too that a woman, who was buying fish at the time, was also injured.
Although the victim said that he was thankful for escaping unharmed, he lamented the need for stiff security at the wharf.
He stressed that robberies are rampant in the area and the perpetrators always manage to evade the police.
“A lot of robberies happening out here. We don’t have any protection out here, Esau cried”.
