Clifton David Gibson, who is currently on remand for the murder of Rubis Executive, Jason Cort, will know his fate tomorrow in relation to a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Gibson, 21, of Tucville, Georgetown, is accused of escaping from lawful custody at Lamaha and Parade Streets, Georgetown,
while waiting to be taken to the Golden Grove lock-ups on June 25, last.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Neville Jeffers, had closed his case after calling several police witnesses to testify before City Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts a week ago.
Thereafter, the defendant was called on to lead a case. He chose to give a sworn testimony.
Gibson testified that he did not escape from the police. He claimed that the police were lying on him and took “pay” to institute the charge against him.
Under cross examination by the Prosecutor, Gibson told the court that his story was the truth. He requested that the Magistrate dismiss the charge.
When questioned by the Prosecutor on whether he was happy with being on remand for murder, Gibson replied no.
Further, in leading his defence Gibson called two witnesses to testify. These were Linton Eastman, 23, and Stancey Rodney, 27, of Perry Street, Tucville, Georgetown. Gibson, Eastman and Rodney are jointly charged with the murder of the Rubis Executive.
Both witnesses testified that they knew nothing about Gibson escaping on the day in question, even though they were all seated in the same police vehicle.
In addition, the witnesses testified that they were not trying to lie or help their friend.
Magistrate McLennan documented the evidence given by all parties in her book of minutes. Then she adjourned the matter to September 28, for decision.
The charge against the trio alleges that on June 7, last, at Meadow Brook Gardens, they murdered Jason Cort during the course of a robbery.
They first appeared before Magistrate McLennan on June 19 and were not required to plead to the charge.
This matter is still pending in the court.
Cort, a 27 year-old, Accounts Executive at Rubis, was gunned down in front of his Jamoon Drive, Meadow Brook Gardens home by gun toting bandits on June 17, last.
He had, moments earlier, arrived home with his fiancée, Shauna Garraway. He was shot to the chest and subsequently died at the Balwant Singh Hospital.
It was reported that the bandits took Cort’s licensed firearm, cell phone, gold band, chain and ring and an X Box console.
According to reports, the couple, who have a two-year-old son, had just come from a Kingston location, and were preparing to head to another venue on East Bank Demerara when the attack occurred.
