The West Berbice Sheep and Goat Farmers Association (WBSGFA) will be holding its eighth annual exhibition at the Number Six ground on October 11, 2015.
The organization, which comprises small farmers of ruminants from Plantation Profit to Rosignol, West Coast Berbice, Region Five, has been in existence for the past nine years.
It was organized to encourage farmers to participate in various projects executed by the National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI) through assistance from the British High Commission in Guyana.
Farmers are exposed to better animal husbandry in general. They are also exposed to better market linkage through the organization.
According to Mr. Rambhajan Ramlagan, Secretary of the Association, they are hoping that the exhibition will , among other things, serve to motivate the farmers to produce high quality animals for the market, both local and overseas, and that it would also serve to establish and sustain linkages with stakeholders in the industry such as feed producers and veterinary medicine suppliers.
The secretary also noted that members of the association have also been benefitting from training in animal husbandry, record keeping, and life skills. Additionally, members seeking to expand, can access special facilities at some financial institutions.
This year, the organization ruminant received a grant under the Rural Enterprise for Agriculture Development programme (READ), and part of the said grant would be used to provide better breeding for farmers.
At the moment emphasis is on producing animals of the Texana breed primarily because of the fact that such animals have been proven to do better than the other breeds tried, putting on weight in less time as compared to the others.
