Police and a group of suspected drug traffickers traded bullets on Wednesday night when the lawmen made a surprise raid on a house in the North West District.
Fortunately no one was reportedly injured but the drug traffickers managed to get away, leaving behind their stash.
Police in a statement yesterday said that about 20:30 hours on Wednesday, acting on a report that armed men were seen in the Powis Landing area, Five Star Backdam, police ranks went to a house where they came under fire.
The ranks returned fire, however, a number of men managed to run out of the building and escape.
“Since it was night, the ranks had to tread cautiously and of course the men took the opportunity to escape,” a source told this newspaper.
The house was searched and 550 grams of marijuana and 40 grams of suspected cocaine were found.
The police did not say if any gun or spent shell was recovered at the scene, which would have given an indication of the type of weapon they were up against.
Investigations are in progress.
