President David Granger yesterday swore in two People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) nominated Commissioners to the Guyana Elections Commission, (GECOM).
The Oath of Office was administered to former Public Works Minister, Robeson Benn, and former Member of Parliament Attorney-at-Law, Bibi Shadick, at the Ministry of the Presidency. Both PPP members severed in the Tenth Parliament. Robeson Benn was a Minister of Works.
The new appointees join Commissioners Sase Gunraj, Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin and Ms. Sandra Jones. They have replaced Mohamood Shaw and Athmaram Mangar.
In brief remarks following the swearing in, President Granger said that with the appointment of the two commissioners, GECOM returns to full strength and is capable of discharging its responsibilities.
The President said, “I’m quite sure that you are impressed with the words of the Oath and I’m confident that the commissioners will discharge their duties without fear or favor, affection or ill will.”
President Granger said that in his view, elections in Guyana are now on a stable footing.
“I certainly would like to congratulate the Chairman, Chief Elections Officer and the members of GECOM, over the last two elections… an air of stability has returned to Guyana,” said Granger.
President Granger, noted, though, that all are impressed with the fact that Jamaica and Trinidad were able to announce election results in a matter of a few hours after the close of poll. He then expressed optimism that Guyana will eventually be able to surmount its challenges in this regard.
“So congratulations and we look forward to the performance of your duties to ensure that we continue to have elections in Guyana, which are credible and which receive the support of the Guyanese People,” President Granger said.
