More than 40 nurses from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) recently graduated, after successfully completing a Paediatric Nurses Development Course.
The course was made possible through collaboration between GPHC and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
According to JICA’s Volunteer Lecturer, Ms. Sumiko Yoshida, who has been stationed at the hospital for over four years, the goal of having the project implemented at GPHC was to improve nursing services and raise the quality of care offered at the facility.
The programme was based on three principles. “These included the realisation of a child friendly environment, improvement of the education environment, and development of education programmes,” Yoshida explained.
Based on these principles, JICA donated a quantity of educational equipment to the Hospital. These included a computer, a printer, a projector, mannequins, a desk, a chair, four white boards and two cabinets, along with light-blocking curtains.
Yoshida also developed nursing programmes focusing on emergency nursing.
With the emphasis on creating a more child friendly environment, the Paediatric Ward of the GPHC was decorated with paintings of child friendly art by JICA.
Assistant Director of Nursing Services, Owen John, lauded the programme, and underscored that Paediatric Nursing in Guyana is moving forward.
Patient Care Advocates also benefited from specialised training under this programme.
