A fair sized crowd was entertained with several action packed duels when the curtains went up on the Lennox Blackmore National Intermediate Boxing Championships at the M&CC Municipal Centre, West Ruimveldt last evening.
The fights were evenly contested; all but two of them ended in knockouts, while another fight, the lightweight contest between Shaquiel Deyoung (GDF) and his gym mate, Akeem Henry, ended with the latter pugilist being gifted a walkover.
Colin Lewis (GDF) also had his hands raised after he forced the referee to halt his jnr/welterweight bout against Kurt Kendall (REP) at 1:04secs of the second round in the first of two fights that ended prematurely. The other bout, an encounter between light/heavyweights, Lawrence Lewis (REP) and Mickle Sancho (GDF) ended 2:18secs into the 2nd round after the soldier unleashed a wicked two fisted assault on his man that had him covering up and forced the referee to institute a mandatory 8 count and eventually wave the bout off.
Diwani Lampkin (FYF) was required to fight twice in the lightweight division and he came through successfully on both occasions. In his first bout he employed shrewd boxing skills and counterpunching ability to take a unanimous verdict from Jamal Brisport (GDF). Lampkin was definitely the more experienced in his bout with Brisport and compiled a better array of combinations from the onset. His crisp right crosses were a joy to behold as he used them to keep his man at bay.
The pattern continued into the second frame but only this time Brisport cunningly lured the taller Lampkin into several toe to toe brawls where he (Brisport) seemed to be more comfortable.
Apparently after being upbraided by his coaches during the break, Lampkin got back up on his bicycle in the third round and regained control of the fight to eventually earn the verdict.
The lanky FYF representative went on to clinch a lopsided majority verdict over Republican, Devon Manroop to end the night on a successful note.
Quincy Boyce (GDF) proved to be too good for Orin Bancroft (FYF) in their lightweight shindig when the two dished it out in a toe to toe slugfest. Boyce appeared to be more ring smart as he engaged his opponent head, luring him into a fight at close quarters. He paid dearly for the mistake and dropped a points decision.
Another soldier, Triston Brown, got the better of Republican, Junior Kelly in the jnr/welterweight class, while Junior Flyweight, Kishon Matthew (REP) out-boxed GDF pugilist, Michael Worrell. One fight later, another Republican, Dexter Wray turned in a gutsy performance to defeat Aluko Venture (GDF) in their flyweight bout.
The bantamweight division saw two soldiers, Jonathon Williams and Keon Williams battling it out with the latter boxer taking the honours by a majority decision while in another fight, also in the bantamweight division, Courtney Lynch (GDF) was disqualified for persistently breaking the rules against Glenroy Griffith (REP). The welterweight division saw Winston Long defeating his gym mate, Trevaghn Dooker on points just before another soldier, Marley Ross, punched his way to victory over Republican, Miles Hinds. Middleweight, Dane July (GDF) proved too good for his gym mate, Julius Handover while Republican, Junior Nurse avenged that defeat with a lopsided verdict over Kevin DeFreitas.
The action continued last night at the same venue where the champion gym will be determined. The Republican Boxing Gym is the defending titlist.
