Government, in collaboration with the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), and private rice millers, has donated rice worth some US$8M to Dominica to assist the country as it recovers from the destruction caused by tropical storm Erika.
This follows the announcement recently made by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, and is being done in association with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
According to a senior official in GRDB, the rice shipment to Roseau, Dominica, is 75 tonnes. Each container has 20-pound bags of rice, already packaged for the Dominicans.
A 40-foot container of rice bran (used in bread and breakfast cereal) was supplied by Caricom Rice Mills, while Sagrice Group Inc and Tecnomills Guyana Inc also supplied some of the rice that is being shipped out.
The Minister of State called the initiative a joint effort between the private sector and the state, in order to respond to the needs of the people of Dominica. He also called it the kind of action which demonstrates to the world that Guyana responds when there is a need.
Dominica, a tiny Caribbean island with a population of 72,000, was ravaged by storms and massive flooding more than two weeks ago when the storm tore through the island killing more than 30 people and causing millions of dollars in damage.
Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit has already signaled that with hundreds of homes, bridges and roads destroyed, Dominica would in essence have to be rebuilt. He also charged residents to pool their resources while foreign aid arrived.
Dominica’s neighbours were the first to deliver aid that included medical assistance and financial aid, with Venezuela and Cuba pitching in with manpower. It is also still the North Atlantic hurricane season. Dominica depends on eco tourism as its main economic earner.
