A Berbice woman is the country’s latest reported road fatality. The woman was struck down by a motor vehicle as she was crossing the Canje Public Road around 21:30 Sunday.
The deceased woman has been identified as Behaspattie, called “Beda”, 52, of Lot 315 Last Street No. 2 Village. She was pronounced dead on arrival the New Amsterdam Hospital, a few minutes away from the point where she was struck down.
It is unclear how the accident occurred but the dead woman’s family members, explained that she was crossing the road when a black Mazda car PPP1989 that was coming from New Amsterdam struck her down. The woman was hurled into the air and landed approximately ten feet away from the point of impact.
Family members claimed that the woman was walking on the pedestrian crossing at the time of the accident, but the point of impact and blood stains suggest that the woman was several feet from the legal crossing marks.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the woman may have consumed some amount of alcohol. Pieces of a shattered brown bottle were spread across the scene.
Meanwhile, family members of the dead woman are claiming that the driver may have been distracted.
There were road lamps at the location of the accident. As a result they are questioning how come the driver didn’t notice the woman crossing the road.
Additionally, a relative said that she was informed of the accident by a neighbour who asked if she heard “Beda” reach up with accident”. After responding in the negative, the woman stated that she went to the dead woman’s son to enquire if what she was told is the truth.
According to the relative, when she arrived at the son’s residence, he was clueless about what happened.
She stated that they immediately went to the New Amsterdam Hospital and was told of the tragedy.
According to the son, Kishan, when he enquired about his mother’s health condition, the doctor placed him to sit and asked him for biographical information relating to his mother.
Not long after, he said that the doctor told him they tried everything but his mother died.
The woman was taken to the hospital by the driver of the said motor vehicle that struck her down.
The son stated that his mother sustained severe injuries to her hands and head while other parts of the body bore cuts and bruises.
The driver of the motor vehicle is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. It is likely that the driver would face a causing death by dangerous driving charge before the week is out.
Behaspattie is survived by her three children, six grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
