Farmers at Belladrum, Berbice, fear that they face severe loss of crops and livestock unless action is quickly taken to stop the rapid erosion of a section of the sea defence dam.
A visit to the area confirmed that sea water has been overtopping the embankment where the earthen dam meets with a wall made out of boulders. At the time the tide was rising, but there was mud from water running across the dam the day before.
Failure to arrest the situation in good time could result in salt water reaching the rice fields, and livestock farmers would also be affected.
There is a possibility of the salt water reaching as far as Cotton Tree Village via the facade canal which serves as a primary drain for the massive Mahaica/Mahaicony Abary Agriculture Development Authority (MMA/ADA) drainage and irrigation scheme, and discharges into the Atlantic.
The farmers are concerned that erosion is rapid, and that this time of the year would traditionally see abnormally high tides. Therefore, they would be comfortable only after the rapidly developing sea defence breach is adequately addressed.
