Anthony Drayton proved that he is made of stern stuff when he rebounded from a third day upset to win both of his games as the curtains came down on the LFS Burnham Memorial Chess Tournament at the National Resource Centre, Woolford Avenue yesterday afternoon.
He defeated Davion Mars and Alexander Duncan to improve his tally by two points for a grand total of 5 ½ points to claim the spoils. Former National Junior and Senior Champion, Taffin Khan, also scored 5 ½ points, after earning a bye from Frankie Farley and defeating Errol Tiwari but had to be content with the second place spot after the tie break system was employed.
Veteran player, Errol Tiwari proved that he still has some amount of sting when he amassed 5 points to close off the podium spots. After suffering the loss to Khan he was gifted a bye after Glenford Corlette failed turn up for his match.
At one stage of the tournament, Roberto Neto had assumed the lead and at the penultimate stage was oozing confidence on 3 points. He managed to add another 2 points to his tally to capture the top honours in the junior category after finishing the tournament on 5 points.
Davion Mars finished second in this category with 3 ½ points while Michael Chapp Jumbo occupied the third place spot after scoring 2 points. The names of those players that have qualified for the national championships will be announced soon.
Further, this tournament was a rated one and the players will be briefed later on of their improved statuses. The presentation of prizes to the respective winners will take place next Friday at the Carifesta Sports Club, Carifesta Avenue, Thomaslands.
The tournament has been sanctioned by the local governing body, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF).
