Foxy Ladies defeated West Side Conquerors 2-1 and progressed to the semi-final round when action continued in the 3rd Annual Foxy Ladies Football Tournament at the Tucville Ground last Saturday evening.
Tiandi Smith continued to be prolific and opened the Foxy Ladies account in the 29th minute with a ripper after her team was given a free kick from about 30 yards out. Smith was like a thorn in the opposition’s flesh and two minutes after her success, attacked once again.
Her right foot shot, though accurate, lacked the power and the opposition’s goalie effortlessly scooped it up to restrict the Foxy Ladies to their slim lead.
The teams came out fighting in the second half with the lasses from West Side Conquerors digging deep for the equalizer. It came in the 52nd minute compliments of a Rebekah Nurse free kick almost to the halfway line that zipped past the Foxy Ladies custodian.
The battle for supremacy heated up with both sides wasting opportunities to surge ahead. Just when it appeared as though the match would have ended in a draw, Shemika Marcus latched on to a loose ball and sent in her team’s second goal in the 54th minute; it proved to be the decider as despite their best efforts West Side Conquerors could not muster the will to equalize.
Demerara Queens and Eagles United engaged in a game that was fast paced but yielded no positive result for either team and they went in at the end of the first session on a nil all stalemate.
Despite their failure to score, the Eagles United was a threatening proposition and kept up the pressure on the opposition. Reshawanna Costello sent in their first goal in the 35th minute while Lakesha Pearson came out of a goal scrimmage to tuck in the second success on the verge of the final whistle, in the 60th minute and sent her team ahead for an unassailable 2-0 triumph.
The tournament has now reached the semi finals stage and Eagles United will clash with Foxy Ladies when activities resume on Friday 11 September while Little Divas clash with Demerara Queens starting at 16:00hrs and 18:00hrs respectively.
