GABF builds new bleacher at MSC Court
By Edison Jefford
Georgetown’s Colts will collide with Linden’s Half Mile Bulls in a colossal clash tonight at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Hard Court in the final of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Forbes Burnham Memorial Championships.
Colts most impressive win in the tournament came in the closing minutes of their semi-final game against Linden’s Victory Valley Royals. Colts were outplayed throughout the game, but managed to dig deep to eek out a victory nevertheless.
Similarly, Bulls trudged its way to the final with a huge win against top ranked Georgetown side, Pacesetters. The upsets placed two unlikely, but emerging teams, in the spotlight for the title in a town named after late President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, in whose honour the contest is being held.
Colts is entering the final after winning a Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) title at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall four weeks ago. Their inside-out game with national point guards, Shelroy Thomas and Dave Causway manning the ball, makes them a threat.
Thomas and Causway resort to the ‘big-man’ feed with former Lindener, national centre, Shane Webster, the main benefactor, whenever they are pressured. This is an area that Bulls will need to address to have any chance of winning the game tonight.
The Linden-based team got off against Pacesetters despite Randy Richardson and Royston Siland dominance on the boards. It exposed the weakness of Bulls’ presence in the paint. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that Webster will be the key for Colts.
For Bulls, guard/forward, Terron Welch has been on top of his game, dropping 35 points against Pacesetters with support from Michael Turner. The youthful duo will need much more support to pull this victory out of the bag of complete obscurity.
A year ago, no one knew of Half Mile Bulls. Now they are playing for a major GABF title with home court advantage. Everything must come together for Bulls against the more complete team in the tournament, Colts. It will be an entertaining showdown.
Colts have an impressive 5-1 record in Linden over the last two years, losing to a combined Jets and Raiders team this year. They are familiar with the MSC surface as is Bulls, which puts both teams on even ground. A new basketball champion will emerge.
In the third place game, Royals will battle Pacesetters from 7pm. Meanwhile, the GABF took it upon itself to invest in rebuilding the dilapidated bleachers on the southern end of the basketball court ahead of the big game tonight.
