Police working in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority, continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the seizure of a high end Sport Utility Vehicle that was fitted with false licence plates.
The Lexus LX 570 SUV was seized by police over the past weekend after it was discovered in the city with licence plates PTT 1256, which, after checks were made, was ascertained to actually belong to a Toyota NZE motorcar.
The Lexus was towed to the Brickdam Police Station where an investigation is ongoing.
Reliable sources have informed that the vehicle does not have the proper documentation, and investigators are working on the theory that it was smuggled off from the port of entry without legitimate customs checks.
Investigators are also trying to ascertain if the vehicle was imported into Guyana through the government re-migrant programme, under which duties are waived, and if the scheme was abused in any way.
