A hostile spell of fast bowling from former National youth all-rounder Clinton Pestano and a solid half century from National and West Indies batsman Assad Fudadin led the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets First Division team to a crushing victory over Upper Corentyne in the opening round of the Berbice Cricket Board/Berbice Bridge Company Inc. 50-overs knock-out cricket tournament.
Pestano claimed 6-28 from eight overs of hostile fast bowling while the experienced Fudadin batted solidly for a well played 65, a knock that included five boundaries and two massive sixes.
Winning the toss and batting first, Upper Corentyne was given a solid opening partnership of 65 runs in 15 overs by Devendra Bapdhu and Nadeem Yacoob as the home team pace trio of Pestano, Keon Sinclair and Fudadin struggled to throw off rustiness after the long season break due to rain.
Former National Under-19 captain Shawn Pereira broke the partnership when Boodhu edged a delivery off Collis Butts at first slip for 13 in the 16th over after which Sinclair claimed the wickets of Premashwar Chatterpaul and Viendra Gooniah in quick succession to leave the visitors at 70-3 in the 19th over.
Pestano then made sure that Upper Corentyne never recovered as he bowled with genuine pace and alarming bounce. Opener Nadeem Yacoob with a composed 45 and number nine batsman Devanand Chatterpaul with eleven (11) were the only batsmen to offer resistance to Pestano as Upper Corentyne were bowled out for 104 off 32 Overs. Pestano ended with 6-28 and was well supported by Keon Sinclair 2-21 off 8 overs, Shawn Pereira 1-18 from 10 overs and Collis Butts 1-6 from 3.
Needing to score 105 from 50-overs for victory, Fudadin and Vidal Crandon batted well to remain unbeaten on 65 and 36 respectively as Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets reached 106 without loss in 15.4 overs. Crandon struck five boundaries in his knock.
Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets would now play Port Mourant in the second round on Saturday at the Area ‘H’ ground with the winner advancing to the final with a bye at the semifinals stage.
Meanwhile, the Management of the Club has announced the appointment of Clinton Pestano as Vice Captain to Shawn Pereira while off-spinner Collis Butts has been placed in charge of Team Discipline.
