Tragedy struck last evening when Rose Hall Estate loader, Mohamed Iftekar Oosman, 30, was pinned by the machine he was working on.
Oosman, of 73 East Street, Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, lost his life around 19:30hrs after he was trapped in the canal, under the Bell Loader.
Sister of the deceased, Bebi Shafeah Oosman, said that her brother left home at approximately 16:00 hrs for his normal days’ work.
In tears, she disclosed that he was driving the Bell Loader across a bridge when the machine toppled into the canal pinning her brother.
Two loaders who were working at the time believed that the bridge was slippery due to the weather and became weak, resulting in the machine toppling with Oosman.
According to the grieving sister, other operators had toppled before but managed to save themselves. However, it was not her brother’s night.
It is believed that the sugar worker drowned after being pinned in the canal. He leaves to mourn his two children, ages three and one and his wife. He was the eldest of three.
