Demerara Queens started their trek to championship honours when they swamped Kuru Kururu Warriors 7-0 in their Group B encounter when the curtains went up on the Annual Women’s Football Tournament last Friday evening.
One match earlier in a Group A match, Little Divas rebounded from being a goal down to Foxy Ladies, in the 47th minute, to equalize the situation through an Abioce Heywood penalty.
Roshanna Grandison (17; 47), Melinda Scott (6; 10; 15) and Natubique Goppy (22; 53) were the architects of the Demerara Queens victory while Abioce Heywood netted a penalty in the 57th minute to equalize for the Divas after Tiandi Smith had netted for Foxy Ladies in the 47th minute.
The lasses played a determined game as fortunes swayed from one team to the next. Smith’s goal came after a marvelous solo run where she dribbled past the opposition’s midfielders and defenders to send in a dolly of a shot. The Foxy Ladies battled ferociously in an attempt to equalize with Heywood being a thorn in the sides of the Little Divas.
She made several breakthroughs down the left flank but her efforts were thwarted by the opposition’s defense. It was after a spirited effort that Heywood was brought down in the box and was awarded a penalty; she made no mistake and gently tapped the ball to the right even as the opposition’s goalie leaped to the left. Heywood’s perseverance saw her making another breakthrough but her run was prematurely halted after she collided with the advancing goalie. The collision was fierce and both players lay huddled on the turf for several minutes while the medic worked feverishly on their injuries. As luck would have it, those injuries were superficial and the match resumed shortly afterwards.
The fierce rivalry continued but in the end the teams had to be content with their earlier goals as the match ended in a stalemate.
Meanwhile, two teams, the New Amsterdam Warriors and the GDF, initially registered to participate have pulled out of the tournament and the organizers have had to reorganize the fixtures.
As such, when the action resumes this afternoon, West Side Conquerors will take on Little Diva Flames while Eagles United oppose Kuru Kururu Warriors.
