With school doors expected to be open soon, students from around Georgetown have benefited from a number of outreach initiatives, hosted by overseas-based organisations and individuals.
Saturday last, approximately 80 primary school students received new backpacks, while some were given school supplies, compliments of Lifting You For Tomorrow’s Success (LYFTS).
President of the Association, Keisha Adams, said the organisation was established three years ago to make a positive contribution to less fortunate children. Adams added that along with the Vice President, Kerwin Adams, the organisation focuses on doing something positive for school children.
The President Keisha Adams stated “It’s basically taking from their pocket to promote and assist children, especially those at the lower end of social economic scale.”
Kerwin, who originally hails from Tucville, Georgetown, donated backpacks and school supplies to the students from Sophia, Tucville and Enterprise Primary Schools.
The father of three, who currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, said that the organisation is his way of giving back to the community.
And 25 children in the Amelia’s Ward community were the proud recipients of haversacks and other school supplies.
The children, who were drawn from amongst the most vulnerable in the community, were presented with the supplies by members of the Aglow International Women’s Ministry.
The President of the Amelia’s Ward group is Daphne Campbell, while Sarah Richards is the Vice President.
Richards said that the children were ecstatic with their packages and the parents were very grateful, for the timely intervention.
She said that it was the Amelia’s Ward group’s first Back-to-School initiative.
The Aglow International Women’s Ministry was established in the 1960’s and targets women of all backgrounds, Richards said.
She noted that while it is not a religious organization it advocates faith in God and women’s empowerment, through self employment, community outreaches and skills development.
The school supplies were sponsored by Cozabs of Coop Crescent, Marclyn’s Variety of the Mackenzie Market and Triple A in the Crescent Mall.
Area Board coordinator of Aglow, Olrita Beaton of the Georgetown Chapter came in for special thanks as she was also responsible for donating some of the haversacks.
