Guyana has added yet another beauty ambassador to its list for 2015 and this time she is a graduate of the Cyril Potter College of Education.
Nineteen year old Akeila Day outshone a bevy of seven beauties to capture the coveted title just after 1 am on Saturday at the National Cultural Center.
This win could see her representing Guyana in New York in 2016 at the International Miss Emancipation Pageant.
The pageant that was void of a swimsuit segment started on Friday night but as a result of technical glitches ran for several hours before Day was bestowed with the title after fierce competition.
Jillicia Thompson, a Biology student at the University of Guyana copped the First Runner-up spot, while Vonnette Peters 21; a medical student at the Georgetown American University got the Second Runner- up position and also copped the trophy for Best Evening Gown.
Jade Primo was the only Fast Track Prize winner, which ensured her a spot in the top four line-up of the culture based pageant. This 3rd year Optometrist student at the University of Guyana eventually copped the Third Runner up position.
While the event was poorly attended and the competition was marred by an almost one hour late start and several false starts to the Community Project Segment, those who stayed to the end left a more enlightened bunch.
As part of the pageant, the delegates were tasked with preparing and delivering a presentation of spoken word which offered a wealth of information regarding the decade of people of African descent, which was well received with celebratory applauses. They then showcased the creative possibilities for the African influenced styled business wear and then came the evening gown showcase of elegance in African lace.
Added entertainment for the event was provided by the Unique Performing Arts group under the stewardship of Kelton Jennings in the style of two dance presentations that showcased kings and queens of passion.
The panel of judges was headed by Ms. Volda Lawrence Minister of Social Protection.
