A shattered window and a gaping hole in the curtain at Lot 187 Bamboo Drive, Meadowbrook, stood as a reminder of one of two gunshots that were fired at a man by two policemen yesterday.
At about 13:30hrs some residents ran for cover but the curiosity of others made them look outside after hearing the sound of gunshots in their environs.
Donna Culley, who lives at lot 188, looked outside and learnt that her 23-year-old son Akeem, was the intended target.
“Me son was liming with dem boys next door, so when I hear the shot I look outside.” She related that she saw a grey car whilst hearing the boys’ next-door saying that her son Akeem had just been shot at before running away.
The mother as well as neighbours related that her son had an exchange of words with two men who identified themselves as police and stated that he was wanted for robbery, and suspected murder of a Sophia resident, among other charges.
“One of the men say Akeem had a gun, but dem lie, ’cause we was out here gaffing and the police pass here about four times before them stop and two of them come out the vehicle… and before we know it was shots at Akeem,” one openly annoyed resident related.
The evidence of the shots fired was further solidified about half hour later when a police vehicle arrived with several ranks including some in plainclothes.
The ranks examined the shattered window, ordered the witnesses to file reports at the police station and picked up two spent shells while Kaieteur News operatives were still on the scene.
The alleged intended target of the shots was still missing in action up to the time Kaieteur News left the scene.
Donna Culley related that as far as she was aware, while her son was in police custody on two or more occasions for petty incidents, nothing ever came of the matters, and she is adamant that “he is not wanted for any crime or murder”.
Other residents are calling for a full investigation and for the ranks to be more careful when using their weapons, contending that innocent persons could have been injured by such actions. Efforts to contact the police were made, but the public relations department numbers rang out.
