Recaptured escapee Ravindra Samaroo who had escaped from the New Amsterdam prison on Wednesday evening has been remanded to jail.
Samaroo, 23, and fellow inmate Lennox Patterson, 26, had escaped around 20:20 hrs from the cells they were in before scaling the 12-ft fence and making their dash for freedom.
Samaroo was recaptured on Thursday evening in a bushy area not too far from where they had escaped.
He appeared yesterday before Magistrate Mauricia Mittelholzer in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court on a charge of escaping from lawful custody. He was not required to plea and was remanded to jail until August 31st when the matter is expected to continue.
Following the breakout, authorities were on high alert and had cordoned off all exit points in the county.
The two prisoners were seen together in the bushy area and officials moved in and were able to capture Samaroo while Patterson escaped.
On the night of the escape the two prisoners were occupying adjoining cells 38 and 39 which had three prisoners each. At the time the other inmates were reportedly sleeping. The men reportedly knocked out a single 7-ft. board from the wooden walls.
They then squeezed their way out of their cells and using about three bed sheets they climbed down the prison walls. The men managed to scale the facility’s high zinc fence, which has barbed wire on top.
In the meantime, persons are blaming the men’s escape on the state of the prison. The facilities are old and dilapidated and not suitable to hold dangerous inmates.
Both men are regulars and have been in and out of prison on various charges. Samaroo was on remand for an alleged armed robbery committed on Triple S Taxi Service in New Amsterdam.
Patterson was recently charged with possession of arms and ammunition and armed robbery committed on A. Ali and Son Supermarket in New Amsterdam. He was found with a gun and live rounds after that incident.
The hunt continues for Patterson and the authorities are asking anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Patterson to contact them on telephone numbers 225-8196, 225-6411, 333-2191, 333-2151, 911 or the nearest police station.
