A popular Rose Hall Town money-changer was yesterday shot and injured, in the region of his chest, by two gun-toting bandits, before being robbed by his assailants who escaped with an undisclosed quantity of money he had in his hands.
According to information, Anil Sookraj, 25, of David Street, Rose Hall Town, was shot around 14:00 hrs opposite Demerara Bank where he regularly operates.
Reports are that Sookrai called “Fat Man” was sitting on a stand with a wad of money in his hand, soliciting business, when two men came up to him. The men demanded his money before shooting him. The man fell and the bandits grabbed up what they could before escaping.
The men ran though different streets before reportedly boarding a car which was waiting in a back street and making good their escape.
In the meantime, the injured Sookraj was picked up and rushed to the nearby private Anamayah Memorial Hospital where he was admitted for emergency treatment.
Sookraj was reportedly first hit in the left forearm as he tried to bar the gunman’s aim. The bullet reportedly exited his arm and re-entered the right side of his chest.
The police were contacted and responded promptly. They scoured the area, but were unable to locate the men. Up to press time, Sookraj’s condition remains critical.
Investigations are continuing.
