As part of its corporate responsibility Scotiabank continues to support the development of sports. Yesterday at their Robb Street branch, the entity presented a cheque of an undisclosed sum to the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) for the hosting of their annual cricket academy which is ongoing at their Queenstown ground.
Speaking at the simple ceremony, Branch manager Brian Hackett said they are pleased to be associated with the programme and pledged to continue working with the club to promote the game. He added this is a continuation of their partnership with the club and hoped the programme will be successful.
President of the club Alfred Mentore thanked the entity for their continued backing. He informed that the bank will also provide personnel to enlighten the youths about savings at an early age later this week.
“Our aim is to ensure that the participants learn the basics of the game at an early age and instill discipline. We also stress about the importance of Education to help the students become well-rounded individuals. Over they years we have contributed significantly to the growth of Guyana’s cricket in that we have produced a number of players who have represented the country at various levels,” he said.
The club’s wicketkeeper batsman Tevin Imlcah gained selection to the West Indies U19 team after a decent performance in the Regional U19 tournament which Guyana successfully defended in Jamaica. All-rounder Ashmead Nedd led Guyana to success in the Regional U15 tournament here; Guyana won the tournament for the second straight year. Sachin Singh, Qumar Torrington and Sagar Hathiramani are all products of the academy.
