– then chokes her unconscious
“Granny, don’t fight me,” were the words that a soft-spoken robber told an elderly woman before choking her into unconsciousness in her Ogle, East Coast Demerara home yesterday.
Thankfully, the 61-year-old victim who resides of Ogle, East Coast Demerara, survived the ordeal.
The woman, who asked not to be identified, said that she feels lucky to be alive after suffering a similar ordeal as 77-year-old Mrs. Carmen Ganesh, who was battered to death in her home less than two weeks ago by an unidentified intruder who is still at large.
According to the 61-year-old, her ordeal took place at around 01:00 hrs on Sunday.
It began when she was in her washroom and noticed a strange man exiting one of her bedrooms.
Upon seeing the intruder, the woman said that she came out of the toilet and confronted him.
“I asked him, ‘what are you doing in my home’ and he put his hands over my mouth. He said ‘granny don’t make a sound’,” the woman recounted.
She said that the thief then demanded that she show him where she has her money and jewelry.
“But I don’t have anything,” she stated.
A struggle then ensued between the woman and her attacker. He threw her on a bed, pressed his knee into her back and choked her from behind. During the ordeal, the man kept demanding cash and jewelry.
But the only jewellery the woman was wearing at the time, was costume jewellery—an earring and chain which she purchased from Avon. The pensioner said that she eventually pointed the thief to her purse, which contained only $900.
After finding the money, the thief reportedly became more incensed and continued to attack the woman.
This time, he tried to drag her to other rooms in the house, but she did not relent.
“Granny don’t fight me,” the man reportedly told the woman as he continued to assault her. Oddly enough, the woman said that throughout the horrific ordeal, her attacker spoke softly and omitted the use of explicit language.
But he then placed a plastic bag over her head and tied something around her neck.
“When I realized that he was trying to strangle me, I stopped fighting up and I lost consciousness,” the victim related.
She said that when she awoke and pulled the bag off her head, the house was dark and quiet.
“I waited a while, because I wasn’t sure if he was gone.” the woman said,
She said that she subsequently telephoned her neighbour, who came to her assistance.
“When my neighbour saw me my entire pajama front was soaked in blood,” the 61 year -old related.
The woman said that that neighbour notified the ranks at Sparendaam Police Station while another assisted with getting medical attention at a private health facility.
The woman is yet to give a statement to the police about the incident.
She noted that her reluctance to have her name publicized is due to the fact that she has not yet told her overseas -based relatives about the incident.
“I am so shaken up. I haven’t slept since,” she added.
The 61 year-old, has joined the growing list of elderly women, who suffered during home invasions, in recent times. The victims, most of whom, lived alone, did not survive the attacks.
