An abusive family life is believed to be the reason behind the shooting and stabbing of 30-year-old Haruni, Soesdyke/Linden Highway resident, Ganesh Henry.
According to Henry, a farmer by profession, he was attacked by his sister’s irate partner who he claims is originally from Mahaica. He told Kaieteur News that over the years his sister has been a hapless victim of an abusive relationship with his alleged assailant.
According to the injured man, the grievance between himself and his sister’s partner begun after he had intervened on behalf of his sister sometime last year. He claims his brother-in-law subsequently made several attempts to hurt him. The threats, he said, were continuous, and Sunday’s attack was an unsuccessful delivery on the assailant’s promises to end his life.
The assault, he said, was triggered by an encounter last Friday.
According to Henry, the man had given his sister a ‘sound beating’, causing her to run to his (Henry’s) home for refuge. The enraged pursuer allegedly came with the express intention of hurting Henry when he went to his home and launched an attack.
Henry related that he grabbed a piece of wood to defend himself, and gave his brother-in-law a thrashing – ‘a lot of lashes’ about his body. The police were called in and the brother-in-law was arrested. While being transported to the Police Outpost, ranks claimed that the man managed to escape from custody.
After keeping out of sight for more than a day, the man, armed with a gun and knife, seized the opportunity to pounce on Henry at a lonely farmland where he was going about his normal routine.
Henry said that he was first shot to his stomach. After receiving the single gunshot wound, he fell to the ground and his attacker took full advantage of him being floored. He was stabbed three times about the body. Once to the left side of his abdomen, another to his right arm and a third time to his left ear.
“I barely find the strength to walk out back from the farm” said Henry who added that he was very grateful to still be alive. “He meant to kill me, but it wasn’t time as yet for me to die”.
Ganesh Henry is now a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital. He has said that he is feeling better and is anticipating going home, despite the fact that his assailant has not yet been apprehended.
