There is an old adage that, “every long rope has an end”, and this was clearly the case for 24-year-old, Sherwin Herbert of Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara, who managed to getaway on foot from police travelling in a vehicle.
The police were looking for him after he was seen removing a gun from his waist.
He was allegedly seen with the weapon on July 29, last, at Grove.
Herbert is reportedly well known to law enforcement authorities, and was captured four days ago after the police contacted him and told him about the allegation of, unlawful possession of arms and ammunitions.
On Wednesday, the vendor appeared before Magistrate Leron Daly at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where two criminal charges were read to him.
It is alleged that Herbert had a semi-automatic pistol in his possession, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence. He was also accused of unlawful possession of two live rounds of ammunition.
Herbert pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently remanded to prison until October 19.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant is presenting the prosecution’s case. His facts revealed that on the day in question, around 01:20hrs, the police were on patrol at Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara in motor vehicle PTT 4855, when they observed the defendant on foot as he turned east into Tank Street, Grove.
After seeing the police, the defendant removed the firearm from the right side of his pants waist and attempted to run. The police accelerated their vehicle which caused the defendant to stumble to the ground, during which time the gun which was in his possession fell on the roadway.
Herbert then got up and made good his escape on foot, east of the said street. The police took possession of the firearm and examined it. They found a live round in the gun’s magazine and another round in the chamber.
On August 3, the defendant was contacted by the police and told of the allegation, to which he denied, at the Providence Police Station.
He was then arrested and charged.
