Digicel Guyana Inc. yesterday continued to separate itself locally in the areas of corporate and social responsibility when it hosted Guyana’s successful Special Olympics team as it returned with several medals from the World Games in Los Angeles, California.
Calvin Thomas was the most successful of the athlete, winning gold in the 5000m and silver in the 3000m.
Annisa Bowman won silver in the female 400m and Kevon Price won silver in the male 200m, while Diandra David won bronze in the both the female 200 and 400 metres to bring Guyana’s total medal haul to six at the event.
Minister within the Ministry of Education with the responsibility for sport, Nicolette Henry was present to congratulate the champions on behalf of the Government of Guyana.
“We are incredibly honoured at your desire and courage to make a difference in the world with your talents and on behalf of the Government of Guyana we extend congratulations to you the athletes for your accomplishments,” Henry stated.
Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Kelly noted the toughness of winning a medal at any Olympics and congratulated the athletes for their efforts.
“This achievement is absolutely marvellous. All four athletes did marvellous, it’s really difficult to win track medals at the Olympics and we at Digicel will like to say thank you for putting Guyana on the map,” Kelly indicated.
The athletes and the managing team also received smart phones from the telecommunication giants.
